Grandmaster Tony Chuy (1952 - 2026) in memoriam
Grandmaster Tony Chuy began his martial arts training at the age of 14 in Hong Kong, where he studied under Grandmaster Lam Hay, who taught the Northern Eagle Claw and Choy Lee Fut styles. He later studied the Praying Mantis system under Grandmaster Brendan Lai and Grandmaster Chiu Chuk-Kai, eventually becoming a disciple of the system.
Aside from his deep knowledge of the Praying Mantis style, Grandmaster Chuy studied and became proficient in various Northern and Southern Chinese weapon systems. He won numerous awards in black belt kata, weapons, and full-contact tournaments, and served as a judge and referee at martial arts competitions from 1979 onward.
In the spring of 1982, with the permission of his teachers, Grandmaster Chuy founded the Praying Mantis Martial Art Institute in New York City. In addition to teaching at his own studio, he instructed students at the Overseas Chinese Television Network’s Actors Training Class and at the Transfiguration Church Chinese Language School. Over the years, Grandmaster Chuy and his students participated in more than 300 martial arts and lion dance performances at celebrations, festivals, cultural events, parades, fundraising activities, and charitable and social occasions throughout New York and New Jersey. He also appeared on the covers of, and was featured in, several martial arts magazines in the United States, China, Hong Kong, and Japan.
Grandmaster Chuy played an important role in the international dissemination of Chinese martial arts. In 2019, he traveled to Brazil to lead a major seminar involving dozens of instructors from across the country, contributing significantly to the development and standardization of Praying Mantis Kung Fu training in Brazil. In 2025, a particularly significant year, his junior classmate (Sidai) Samuel Mendonça lived in New York City, where he trained intensively under Grandmaster Chuy, further strengthening the transmission of the system between the United States and Brazil.
Grandmaster Tony Chuy passed away in January 2026. His legacy endures through his students, institutions, and the generations of practitioners shaped by his teaching.
Grandmaster Chuy’s life’s work was dedicated to promoting Chinese martial arts and sharing their philosophy and benefits with the West. His approach reflected a constant pursuit of excellence and the disciplined cultivation of both body and mind. He believed that martial arts training not only improves health and physical fitness, but also fosters essential qualities such as courtesy, respect, discipline, endurance, and personal growth.

O Grão-Mestre Tony Chuy iniciou seu treinamento em artes marciais aos 14 anos, em Hong Kong, onde estudou com o Grão-Mestre Lam Hay, praticante dos estilos Garra de Águia do Norte e Choy Lee Fut. Posteriormente, aprofundou-se no sistema Louva-a-Deus (Praying Mantis) sob a orientação dos Grão-Mestres Brendan Lai e Chiu Chuk-Kai, tornando-se discípulo formal do sistema.
Além de seu profundo domínio do estilo Louva-a-Deus, o Grão-Mestre Tony Chuy estudou e tornou-se proficiente em diversos sistemas de armas tradicionais chinesas do Norte e do Sul. Conquistou inúmeros prêmios em competições de kata, armas e full contact, e atuou como árbitro e juiz em torneios de artes marciais desde 1979.
Na primavera de 1982, com a autorização de seus mestres, fundou o Praying Mantis Martial Art Institute, em Nova York. Além de lecionar em sua própria escola, ministrou aulas na Actors Training Class da Overseas Chinese Television Network e na Transfiguration Church Chinese Language School. Ao longo dos anos, o Grão-Mestre Tony Chuy e seus alunos participaram de mais de 300 apresentações de artes marciais e dança do leão em celebrações, festivais, eventos culturais, desfiles, atividades beneficentes e ocasiões sociais em Nova York e Nova Jersey. Também foi capa e tema de reportagens em diversas revistas especializadas em artes marciais nos Estados Unidos, China, Hong Kong e Japão.
O Grão-Mestre Tony Chuy desempenhou papel fundamental na difusão internacional das artes marciais chinesas. Em 2019, esteve no Brasil para conduzir um grande seminário que reuniu dezenas de instrutores de diferentes regiões do país, contribuindo de forma decisiva para o desenvolvimento e a padronização do Gung Fu Louva-a-Deus no Brasil. Em 2025, ano especialmente marcante, seu aluno Samuel Mendonça viveu em Nova York, onde treinou de forma intensiva sob sua orientação, fortalecendo ainda mais a transmissão do sistema entre os Estados Unidos e o Brasil.
O Grão-Mestre Tony Chuy faleceu em janeiro de 2026. Seu legado permanece vivo por meio de seus alunos, de suas instituições e das gerações de praticantes formadas a partir de seus ensinamentos.
