Northern Mantis Brazil is the largest Praying Mantis Gung Fu school in the country, with a presence in 10 Brazilian states and the United Kingdom. The school was founded in 1999 with the support and presence of Grandmaster Brendan Lai (1942–2002). Head Instructor Dr. Samuel Mendonça, a university professor for over 25 years and a martial arts instructor since 1996, has led the training of two generations of certified instructors, in 2014 and 2019. He is responsible for the development and preservation of the lineage of Grandmaster Brendan Lai and Master Tony Chuy in Brazil, which traces back to Hong Kong’s legendary “King” of Praying Mantis, Grandmaster Wong Hon-Funn. Northern Mantis Brazil follows the official curriculum of Master Tony Chuy’s school, maintaining the integrity of the traditional system while promoting its growth for future generations.

Instructor Samuel Mendonça is a disciple of Grandmaster Brendan Lai (Hong Kong/USA) and continues his studies in the USA under Master Tony Chuy, his elder kung fu brother, in New York City. Mendonça holds a degree in Philosophy, a Master's in Ethics (PUC Campinas), a PhD in Philosophy of Education (Unicamp), and a Postdoctoral degree (USP). He is also a CNPq researcher. Currently, he is a Full Professor at Pontifical Catholic University of Campinas and a Visiting Scholar at Teachers College, Columbia University in New York, USA.

Samuel Mendonça é professor titular da Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Campinas, desde o ano de 2000, com atuação no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Educação. Atua como Visiting Scholar no Teachers College da Columbia UniversEle orienta teses de doutorado, dissertações de mestrado e pesquisas de iniciação científica. Nas artes marciais, Samuel Mendonça iniciou sua prática aos 12 anos de idade no Judô, na cidade de Franca, SP. Praticou diferentes artes marciais e focalizou sua atenção e treinamento no sistema Louva-a-deus sob a orientação do Grão-mestre Brendan Lai em São Francisco, na Califórnia, tornando-se discípulo direto do fundador do Louva-a-deus. Por recomendação de seu Professor Lai, Samuel manteve seus estudos em New York, com seu irmão mais velho de treinamento, o experimente Master Tony Chuy.
Doutor Mendonça fundou o Instituto de Gongfu Brendan Lai, com autorização e presença do Grão-Mestre Brendan Lai, em 1999 com seu irmão de treinamento, Paulo Junqueira da Costa. Depois de sua cirurgia de artroplastia de quadril, Samuel retomou o ensino de Artes Marciais por meio de um novo conceito, o de Filosofia da Travessia.
Samuel Mendonça praticou também o Zhouyi quan, Chen Taiji quan e Toun Bei Chan Quan com o Grão-mestre Chen Guo Suo e seu discípulo Reinaldo Silveira. Em 2014, Mendonça teve a honra de praticar Taiji quan em Shanghai, China. Além disto, praticou Baoding e Beijing Shuaijiao com o Prof. Marcelo Antunes e Mestre Nereu Graballos (in memoriam).
Samuel Mendonça ministrou seminários em Genebra, Suíça, em Fort Worth, Dallas, New York, USA e em diversos estados brasileiros. Foi Diretor Técnico de Wushu Tradicional da Conferação Brasileira de Gungfu/Wushu por mais de 10 anos e Vice-Presidente da Federação Paulista de Kungfu/Wushu.
Samuel Mendonça is a Full Professor at the Pontifical Catholic University of Campinas (PUC-Campinas), where he has worked since 2000, contributing to the Graduate Program in Education. He currently serves as a Visiting Scholar at Teachers College, Columbia University. He supervises doctoral theses, master’s dissertations, and undergraduate research projects. He is a CNPq Research Productivity Fellow and was the Founding President of the Latin American Association for Philosophy of Education. In the martial arts realm, Ph.D. Samuel Mendonça started with the japanese Judo, at the age of 12, in Franca City, SP countryside. He has practiced different martial arts systems and has become specialized in the Northern Praying Mantis, under the Grand Master Brendan Lai in San Francisco, California and Brazil as well, having become a direct disciple of the Praying Mantis founder lineage. As per Grand Master Brendan Lai's recommendation, Mendonça keeps on his studies related to the chinese martial arts with the Grand Master Brendan Lai's disciple in New York, Master Tony Chuy.
Doctor Mendonça founded the Lai's Gungfu Institute in Campinas, in the presence of the Grand Master Brendan lai in 1999. Right after a hip arthroplasty surgery in December 2015, Mendonça ceased his teaching activities.
Mendonça has also practiced Zhouyi quan, Chen Taiji quan and Toun Bei Chan quan with the Grand Master Chen Guo Suo and Prof Reinaldo Silveira. In 2014, he honed his practice of the Taijiquan in Shanghai. Also, Mendonça has practiced Baoding and Beijing Shuaijiao and is an Assistant Professor and Vice President of the Shuaijiao Brazilian Confederation.
He has given seminars about the Praying Mantis system in Geneva, Switzerland and in Dallas Fort Worth, USA, not to mention several brazilian states. Mendonça was also a Technical Director of the Wushu Brazilian Confederation for 10 years and the Vice-President of the Wushu San Paulo Federation.
