Genealogy of the Northern Praying Mantis System (Hong Kong/USA)

When practicing Chinese martial arts (Wu Shu, commonly known as Gung Fu, though the official transliteration is Gong Fu), a common question arises: “Who is your teacher/master?” This seemingly simple question, which might appear to express mere curiosity, actually seeks a deeper kind of information: it relates to the “legitimacy” of the practice. If a teacher or master was authorized by another recognized instructor or master, this implies that the individual holds legitimacy within a martial arts system. Thus, at its core, the question “Who is your teacher/master?” is really an inquiry into the authenticity and lineage of what is being practiced.

Legitimacy also resides in the role of the student. Without the recognition of the learner, the one who teaches essentially does not exist. Conversely, when someone teaches without having been formally authorized, this does not automatically disqualify their teaching or their capability. Therefore, while legitimacy is indeed important in the martial arts world, it is not everything.

There are those who hold legitimacy, that is, recognition from an instructor or master who was also authorized to teach, but may lack other essential qualities in the martial arts world, such as respect, understanding, and openness to dialogue. This is why we believe that no one should be judged solely for lacking formal legitimacy, as long as they cultivate a respectful and open learning environment. Dialogue, mutual respect, and openness to understanding the unfamiliar are central to our philosophy. This is the spirit of our community: absolute respect for all who seek us out, regardless of their background in martial arts.

We learn from everyone, always. This is our motto. In the case of Northern Praying Mantis (a name used by Grandmaster Wong Hon Funn in Hong Kong), the genealogy, which represents the legitimacy of what is practiced within Northern Mantis Brazil, can be outlined as follows:

• Founder – Wong Long (specialist in sword techniques)
• 2nd Generation – Sing Siew (Taoist, of unknown origin)
• 3rd Generation – Lee Sarn Jin (up to this generation, only 3 or 5 forms were practiced – Kai Uwe Pel, 2017)
• 4th Generation – Wong Wing Sang (led a major evolution of the system, incorporating many new forms)
• 5th Generation – Fahn York Tung (was invited to teach at Jing Mo and sent his disciple Law instead)
• 6th Generation – Law Gwong Yook (moved from Shanghai to teach in Hong Kong)
• 7th Generation – Wong Hon Funn (the “King” of Praying Mantis in Hong Kong, who graduated 25 disciples)
• 8th Generation – Brendan Lai (known as “Lightning Hands,” a pioneer in the USA)
• 9th Generation – Samuel Mendonça, Ph.D. (founded Northern Mantis Brazil in the presence of his Master in 1999)

There are other instructors in Brazil authorized to teach within the Northern Mantis Brazil lineage. However, their legitimacy comes directly from those who graduated in the First Instructor Certification, held in 2014 in Campinas.

Quando se pratica arte marcial chinesa (Wu Shu, conhecido por Kung Fu, mas, a grafia oficial é Gong Fu), é comum a pergunta "quem é o seu professor/mestre"? Esta pergunta aparentemente ingênua que parece expressar apenas um tipo de "curiosidade" revela a busca por um tipo de informação que remete à "legitimidade" do que se pratica. Se o professor/mestre foi autorizado por outro professor/mestre, isto significa que se trata de alguém com "legitimidade" dentro de um sistema de arte marcial. Então, no fundo, ao perguntar "quem é o seu professor/mestre"?, busca-se saber a legitimidade do que se pratica. A legitimidade se estabelece, também, no papel do aprendiz. Sem o reconhecimento daquele que aprende, quem ensina sequer existe. De outro lado, quando se ensina sem que alguém legítimo tenha autorizado, isto não significa demérito nem do que se ensina e muito menos incapacidade de ensino. Portanto, ter legitimidade no mundo das artes marciais é muito importante, por certo, mas não é tudo.

Há quem tenha legitimidade, isto é, reconhecimento de algum instrutor/mestre que foi também autorizado a ensinar, no entanto, faltam-lhe outros aspectos também caros neste mundo da luta, como por exemplo, o respeito, a compreensão e o diálogo. É por isto que não se deve julgar quem, eventualmente, não tenha "legitimidade" do que se pratica, desde que o ambiente dialógico seja possível, desde que haja respeito entre as pessoas e, principalmente, desde que se tenha abertura à compreensão daquilo que se desconhece. É assim o entendimento dos nossos parceiros, de respeito absoluto às pessoas que nos procuram, sejam conhecedoras ou não de outras artes marciais. Aprendemos com todos, sempre, eis o nosso lema!

No caso do Louva-a-deus do Norte (nomenclatura utilizada pelo Grão-Mestre Wong Hon Fan em Hong Kong), a genealogia, que descreve a legitimidade daquilo que se pratica no Lai Kungfu, pode ser assim visualizada:

Fundador - Wong Long (especialista em técnicas de espada)

2.a geração - Sing Siew (taoísta de origem desconhecida)

3.a geração - Lee Sarn Jin (até esta geração, praticava-se 3 ou 5 formas (Kai Uwe Pel, 2017)

4.a geração - Wong Wing Sang (provocou uma grande revolução tendo incorporado muitas formas ao sistema)

5.a geração - Fahn York Tung (recebeu o convite para ensinar na Jing Mo e indicou seu discípulo Law)

6.a geração - Law Gwong Yook (saiu de Shanghai para ensinar em Hong Kong)

7.a geração - Wong Hon Fan (o "rei" do Louva-a-deus de Hong Kong graduou 25 discípulos)

8.a geração - Brendan Lai (conhecido por "mãos de relâmpago" e pioneiro nos USA) 

9.a geração - Samuel Mendonça ph. d. (inaugurou o Northern Mantis Brazil na presença de seu Mestre, em 1999)
