Master Ron Aviles

Master Ron Aviles is one of Grandmaster Brendan Lai’s (Lai Dat Chung) longest-standing disciples and an important figure in preserving his legacy within the Northern Praying Mantis Gungfu tradition.

His martial arts journey began in 1969, at the age of thirteen, when he started studying Kenpo Karate under Grandmaster Ralph Castro of the Shaolin Kenpo Karate Family, whose lineage traces back to Professor William Chow of Hawaii. Master Ron received his brown belt in 1970.

In November of that same year, Ron began studying Northern Praying Mantis under Brendan Lai Sifu, remaining his student for more than three decades, until Lai Sifu’s passing in 2002. Over those many years, Ron witnessed and participated in different periods of Brendan Lai’s teaching and the development of his school in California.

From 1977 to 1980, Ron lived in New York City, where he worked for Trans World Airlines (TWA). During this period, he connected with Tony Chuy, who was also receiving instruction from Brendan Lai. In 1981, Ron returned to San Francisco and continued his training directly with Lai Sifu at various locations, including the San Francisco Ferry Building and the Panhandle of Golden Gate Park.

His martial arts background also includes the study of Escrima under Rene Latosa from 1981 to 1983, and Wu Tai Chi Chuan under Sifu Ben Botin from 2014 to 2016. From 2003 to 2007, he served as Chief Gungfu Instructor for the LeeJetDon Lion Dancing group at the Confucius Temple of Sacramento, California.

Beyond his martial arts training, Ron Aviles holds a BA in International Relations from San Francisco State University.

Master Ron Aviles holds a particularly important place in the history of Brendan Lai’s Kungfu Institute. As my Dai Sihing, my senior Gungfu brother, Ron has shared with me over the years not only his technical knowledge, but also memories, insights, and teachings arising from his many years with Brendan Lai Sifu. In Sacramento, I had the honor of learning Muy Fah Kuen from him, one of our Sifu’s favorite forms. Since Brendan Lai’s passing in 2002, Ron’s guidance, generosity, and care have represented for me an important continuation of our Sifu’s teachings.

His presence on this page expresses our gratitude and also reflects a fundamental principle of our school: a tradition remains alive when knowledge, experience, and care are passed from one generation to the next.

Mestre Ron Aviles
